Out of mourning, on to Xmas

The mourning period is over. Yes, UK has bragging rights for the next year (but barely, and a questionable barely at that), and Louisville continues to have bad luck, but there is a gleam of hope.

On to other matters, the New York Times published an interesting article on Firefox saying how the fox is in Microsoft’s henhouse (and salivating) (reprinted at CNET for your login-free perusal).

The people at American Antigravity are doing some cool things. Maybe this means my dream of having a jet belt, or something similar, will finally come true.

I love small innovations that don’t really seem like that big of a deal, but offer some simplistic improvement to your life. These cool ‘disc hubs’ do exactly that. Stick them to a flat surface (verticle or horizontal) and pop a CD or DVD onto them for easy storage and retrieval. The only downside is the price, but I am sure someone will come out with a cheaper alternative soon.

First there was Tiny Linux, then there was Pocket Linux, and now comes Damn Small Linux, a 50MB operating system that will fit on your USB drive. You can boot to it, or even install it on your PC. I will be testing it out over the holiday season, and will report the results later.

Lastly, I have added a Paypal Donation button to my Music page to hopefully get some fundage for the hosting of all the free MP3’s I offer. I’m not requiring anything, just hoping that if you download some tunes, you help keep them alive for the enjoyment of the next person to come along. 🙂

Update:
The game was won by neither Red nor Blue, rather, it was bestowed by the men in Black and White. This is worse than the Supreme Court deciding who the president is.

Numero Uno

The basketball season is less than a month away, and my preseason jitters are keeping me awake at night. You would think I am the starting point guard, but alas, I am not.

Here is the crazy thing:
Athlon Magazine has Louisville (my favorite, in case you weren’t aware of it) ranked #1 in their preseason top 25. ESPN has Louisville ranked above Kentucky (13) and Duke (14) for the first time I can recall, at number 12.

I know what you are saying: preseason polls don’t mean a lot. However, based on previous polls since Rick Pitino has been coaching the Cards, Louisville has overachieved. Last year, they rose to #2 in the country atop a 16 game winning streak. Then they fell apart to injuries and being schooled in the inside game. This year, they actually have the post players to push back against the teams that took them apart. And according to Coach Pitino, they still have that same fire. So who knows what will happen?

This is so exciting.

Within about 36 hours, you will be able to see the latest round of Gray pictures. I am just waiting for the domain name to resolve to my new server. I went ahead an remade the whole site again in addition to posting pictures from the last 2 months, including our beach trip last weekend.

In other news, I was happy to see the Bookmark Synchronizer has finally been updated to work in Firefox 1.0PR, which means I can now maintain a shared set of bookmarks between home, work, and now my USB drive with Portable Firefox.

Firefox keeps getting better and better. Now if they would only develop a version for Windows Mobile 2003 so I could run it on my X3i…(hint hint)

I found a lot of good stuff around the Internet today.

My daily check of molly.com revealed CSS guru Eric Meyer is near completion of a cool slideshow tool called S5. I had just started piecing together a Powerpoint presentation at work, and now I think I will ditch it for Eric’s semantic, valid method. It will make me the envy no one at work, but at least I will feel cool on the inside.

Along the same lines, I stumbled upon a nifty tool called Web Album Generator which makes quick work of cranking out standards-compliant photo galleries. I would like to have seen it abandon tables completely, but it’s not a bad tool for a quick and easy gallery for those times your parents in Kentucky are dying to see the latest picture of your kid 😉

Speaking of Kentucky, I was recently solicited by one Thommy Browne to help fill in some history at the new LouisvilleHardcore.com wiki. Having a memory like an elephant, I hope to find time to write down everything I can.

The only news to report from here is that we had a great 4 day weekend at the beach. Gray was thrilled beyond belief at the marvels of sand, surf, and seagulls. Pictures coming soon.

Getting Better

It’s finally starting to look organized around here. I couldn’t sleep with the haphazard design I whipped together for this site, so I bit the bullet and stayed up late last night creating an improved look. It still needs work, but at least it’s not completely shameful right now.
