Second String was born at Warren Wilson College in 1995. The lineup started as: Will Chatham - banjo, vocals Lance Mills - guitar, vocals Ty Gilpin - Mandolin, vocals Jones Smith - Upright bass, vocals

In the last year or so of existence, Ferd Moyese joined in on fiddle.
